The venues with the most sketch on the calendar right now are Second City Chicago Mainstage, Second City e.t.c. Theater - Chicago, Second City Donny's Skybox Theater - Chicago and Second City Judy's Beat Lounge - Chicago. Second City is the anchor — its resident companies have been staging sketch revues since 1959 — while independent teams and showcase nights run in theaters and bars across the city.
A revue is a full evening of short scripted comedy scenes, songs, and blackouts performed by a resident cast — the format Second City made famous and a training ground for generations of Saturday Night Live cast members. Unlike improv, sketch is written and rehearsed, though many Chicago revues still end with an improvised set.
