Most mics use a sign-up list — either in person shortly before the show or online in advance — and give each comic 3 to 5 minutes of stage time. Arrive early: popular mics fill their lists fast, and some use a bucket draw instead of first-come-first-served. Check the show's listing or the venue's Instagram for that mic's sign-up rules.
Almost all Chicago open mics are free for audiences, though bar venues usually appreciate a drink order. A few mics charge performers a small fee or an item minimum to get stage time. Any mic with a cover charge shows a price on its listing here.
